Cowboys Rookie Lineman to Change Positions at OTAs?
While many continue to laud what is expected to be an explosive scoring in 2023, the Dallas Cowboys greatest asset on offense may be their formidable offensive line.
Anchored by first-team All Pro Zack Martin at right guard, the Cowboys protective unit is once again poised to provide adequate time and comfort for quarterback Dak Prescott to utilize his bevy of offensive weapons, including wide receivers CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks and running back Tony Pollard.
While Dallas' starting line is thought to be set heading into OTAs, which begin this week across the NFL, a recent suggestion from Inside The Star, has Cowboys fans wondering if an undrafted rookie may crack the 53-man roster by switching positions.
Oregon left tackle T.J. Bass signed with the Cowboys after failing to hear his name called during the 2023 NFL Draft. is one of the more likely position changes during training camp. Though making an NFL roster -- especially one as well-stocked as Dallas' -- is inherently a tall task, some believe that Bass may see a path to the pros by making the switch to guard.
At 6-4, 320 pounds, Bass cuts an imposing figure along the offensive line. He played the majority of his collegiate career at tackle. He made 34 career starts on the left side (21 at left tackle, 13 at left guard, inside Oregon's 54-46 run-pass split offense and multiple run game. For his efforts, he earned a 93.6 run-block grade on zone runs in 2021 and 2022, per Pro Football Focus.
When performing at his highest level, Bass plays long out of his stance in the run game to maximize his length and make initial contact with his defender. While his skill set makes him an effective tackle, it also lends itself to success at guard.
Perhaps more importantly, Bass' road to a roster spot may be paved a bit smoother at left guard. Incumbent starter Terence Steele will be returning from injury to presumably start at right tackle, while Tyron Smith seems to be set on the left side. Assuming Tyler Smith as the left guard …
Despite the team's addition of North Carolina's Asim Richards, Bass can in theory provide a formidable challenge for Chuma Edoga, Matt Waletzko, Josh Ball and Matt Farniok as a swing or situational depth option in 2023.
