Padres News: Bob Melvin Hasn’t Been Told About His 2024 Status
Though they're playing their best baseball of the season including a walk-off win against the Rockies on Tuesday night, the Padres' 2023 season has still been disappointing on multiple fronts.
Despite a seven-game win streak in the past week of play, Bob Melvin's squad has been one of baseball's most frustrating teams that has caused speculation about his possible job security for next year, even with denial from the man himself.
“I’m doing my job like I always have until someone tells me different,” Melvin said, “and I have not been told that.”
Amidst a number of controversies surrounding Manny Machado's efforts as a clubhouse leader, lack of cohesion between Melvin and A.J. Preller as GM and questions about the team's effort all year long, it's fallen on the Friars skipper to answer some of them.
Even with a talented roster at his disposal filled with multiple All-Stars in the starting lineup and the presumptive Cy Young favorite in the National League, Melvin has failed to navigate the team to a winning record thus far in 2023.
With preseason expectations of a division title at bare minimum, much like the Mets and their similarly expensive payroll, San Diego has struggled in the NL standings and are a long shot to even get a Wild Card spot.
How much Melvin is to blame compared to the roster Preller has given him to manage remains to be seen, but reports about their feud have become public in what's been a drama-laden season in Southern California.
Moves to go all in at the trade deadline have provided mixed results to put it kindly, as the Padres risk fumbling a chance at defending a divisional series win that gave fans at Petco reasons to cheer last season.
