Sunderland signed Northern Ireland defender Trai Hume in January 2022, with the Black Cats having unearthed a gem in the process.

Hume, now 21, arrived with very little experience. He was playing for Linfield and had to wait his chance at the Stadium of Light.

But in the second half of last season, Hume solidified his place in the starting XI and he's now one of the first names on the team sheet for Tony Mowbray.

Hume is also a full international with Northern Ireland, playing in the back-four alongside Sunderland teammate Dan Ballard during the international break this month.

At the time of his arrival, it was reported (via FLW) that Sunderland paid £200,000 for Hume, in what would've been a bargain buy for a player with Hume's quality.

But since, it's been revealed that the Black Cats paid just £150,000 for the versatile defender.

A credit to Sunderland

Paying so little for such a good player is a huge win for Sunderland.

They've been patient with Hume, but at the same time, the player has had to adapt quickly to fill in for Sunderland.

He arguably came in because of injuries last season but he's since become a key player for the Black Cats, who could one day make a huge profit on the youngster.

Hume will only get better and better too, with his international experiences bound to make him a better player at club level too.

Sunderland return to Championship action vs Alex Neil's Stoke City this weekend in what will be another tough, but perhaps winnable outing for the Black Cats who currently sit in 4th place of the table.
