Blackhawks’ Keith gets match penalty against Wild

Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith received a match penalty for swinging his stick into the face of Wild forward Charlie Coyle.

Duncan Keith is a Stanley Cup champion, Conn Smythe Trophy recipient and Norris Trophy winner, largely because of his expert ability to use his stick.

The way he used his stick against the Minnesota Wild’s Charlie Coyle on Wednesday won’t be winning him anything, although he did receive a match penalty for his actions.

As per Rule 21.2 of the NHL rulebook, “In addition to the match penalty, the player shall be automatically suspended from further competition until the Commissioner has ruled on the issue.”

Keith has been suspended twice in his career, five games for an elbow to the head of Vancouver Canucks forward Daniel Sedin in 2012, and one game for high sticking Los Angeles Kings forward Jeff Carter in 2013.
