Veteran wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. accepted a very team-friendly contract to return to the Detroit Lions.

After a stint with the Jaguars, Jones Jr. is joining a team that has new leadership and new, realistic expectations this season.

Jones' one-year, $3 million contract has the potential to be worth a total of $5 million, if incentives built into the agreement are met. His base salary of $1.4 million this season is fully guaranteed.

His $1.6 million signing bonus is spread out equally over the next two years.

The 33-year-old wideout has guarantees totaling $3 million, but his cap hit is only $2.2 million in 2023. His cap number in 2024 is $800,000.

Like many other contracts that Detroit general manager Brad Holmes has negotiated, Jones' deal has one voided year built into it, allowing the team to take on less of a cap hit in the first year of the agreement.

Once DJ Chark decided to part in free agency, the team made an effort to bring back one of its productive receivers from Jones' first stint in Motown.

"From the start, it was evident that they wanted me here. But, it took me to try to see, try to see what I was going to do, stay on the West Coast or whatever," Jones told reporters. "That’s how free agency is, but I don’t know. I think when somebody wants you here, you automatically have that feeling, that sense of, 'Oh, maybe I belong here, I’ve always belonged here,' or whatever."

2023

Prorated bonus: $800,000

Cap hit: $2,200,000

2024 (Void)

Prorated bonus: $800,000

Cap hit: $800,000
