New York Giants Week 1 Injury Report: All Hands (Mostly) on Deck
It was all hands on deck for the New York Giants for their first official practice ahead of their Week 1 game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Head coach Brian Daboll told reporters that every player on the roster would practice, though some might be more full-go than others. As such, seven players appeared on the team's first injury report of the 2023 season issued on Wednesday and were listed as "limited."
-RB Gary Brightwell (knee): Brightwell, who figures to continue having a big role on special teams, continues to be sidelined by a knee issue that first popped up midway through training camp.
-LB Cam Brown (ankle): Brown is another core special teams player who has been slowed down by a lingering injury since the back half of the preseason.
-TE Lawrence Cager (ankle): Cager, the third tight end, is--you guessed it--another player that contributed on special teams.
-DL D.J. Davidson (knee): Davidson was activated off the PUP list late in training camp. As the sixth defensive lineman on the roster, he's likely to have been inactive Sunday anyway as he continues ramping up.
-DB Cor’Dale Flott (hamstring): Flott has been bothered by his injury for at least three weeks now. Hamstrings can be tricky, so it wouldn't be surprising if Flott misses the regular season opener.
-DB Gervarrius Owens (hamstring): Like others with a hamstring issue, the Giants are playing it cautiously with Owens. The Giants' seventh-round draft pick likely would have been inactive Sunday anyway, as the team figures to dress four safeties (Xavier McKinney, Jason Pinnock, Dane Belton, and Bobby McCain).
-WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee): Robinson was just activated off PUP at the end of training camp and continues to ramp up. He's unlikely to be available for the regular-season opener on Sunday.
Given this injury list, the Giants could be without three core special teams players this weekend (Brown, Brightwell, and Cager). That's not good news for a unit that struggled last year and continued its struggles in the preseason, especially on coverage.
When the practice squad elevations are made, don't be surprised if Taiwan Jones and Cam Sims both get the call-up from the practice squad.
The Cowboys listed four players on their injury report, three of whom did not practice. The most notable of those who didn't practice is offensive lineman Tyler Smith, a starter on their offensive line who has been dealing with a hamstring issue suffered earlier this week. The others include defensive end Sam Williams (foot) and safety Donovan Wilson (calf),
Cornerback Jourdan Lewis (foot) was a full participant.
