Chargers News: Why Insider’s Pitch For Hall Of Fame Brandon Staley Replacement Is A Terrible Idea
Coming from the LA area, local TV broadcasting rights ensure I've gotten used to your Los Angeles Chargers' choking ways nearly every Sunday afternoon in the fall.
It's become a weekly tradition, no matter who mans the sidelines, for the Bolts to watch the team continue underachieving despite their massive talent on both sides of the ball.
The most recent victim of this trend is current LA head coach Brandon Staley, who seemingly only has a job because he knows Sean McVay on a first-name basis.
The former Rams defensive coordinator took the Chargers' top job in 2021, and two seasons in, he may be the worst case of failing upwards I've seen watching this team.
Faux pas analytics and success despite these decisions frustrate me to no end.
And yet, despite it all, LA still has a .500 record this year.
This says more about Staley's defense bailing him out in the team's last two wins, as they could easily be 0-4, thanks to consecutive weeks of going for it on 4th in his territory.
Every football team wants to win, but this may be the worst-case scenario for LA.
Staley's been on the hot seat since the notorious 2021 season finale, where a tie could have sent the team to the postseason alongside the Raiders.
Instead, Staley chose an aggressive run defense as Vegas took the move as an insult and booted a game-winning field goal and LA out of the playoff picture in one play.
Last year was more of the same by injuring his starters in the regular season finale and blowing a 24-point lead deep into the second quarter for the most Chargers moment in recent memory.
What more does this man need to prove (or not prove in this sense) for changes to be made?
Replacements can be found across the NFL landscape, but one from notorious insider Bill Simmons just doesn't sound feasible: New England Patriots head coach/GM Bill Belichick.
Perhaps an even dumber question is why Belichick would leave the dynasty that he helped build with his bare hands?
As both a master defensive strategist and de facto general manager of the franchise, the coach won six rings over 20 years as the most dominant coach in NFL history.
Sure, the Patriots replaced the greatest quarterback of all time with Mac Jones, and some regression from their glory days was more than due.
That could easily change next season in the draft should the Patriots earn the No. 1 pick and, by proxy, the rights to select USC wunderkind Caleb Williams.
One win through five weeks in this current campaign isn't a great scenario, and several questions about how Brady mattered more to their run continue surfacing.
Herbert boasts more talent than Jones, but the Chargers likely wouldn't let Belichick seize front-office control like Robert Kraft has in Foxborough.
Staley seems likely to get fired this season with another playoff flameout or anything less, but I'll be the first to apologize to Chargers fans everywhere.
Belichick taking over the Chargers' job is less likely than Staley learning how to manage a game.
