PFF Urges Chargers to Target This NFC North Cornerback in Free Agency

A glaring need for LA's defense.

Uninspiring in their week one matchup after many hoped they'd improve in 2023, the Chargers' secondary continues to be a weak point in their inconsistent defense.

Looking ahead to the offseason in addressing such a need, one analyst suggested a target from the NFC to aid the Bolts on the back end of their defense for the foreseeable future.

Free agent: Chicago Bears CB Jaylon Johnson

Johnson is stuck playing a lot of soft zone and off coverage in Chicago, and it doesn’t appear to fit his skill set all that well. He is in a pivotal contract year in 2023 that got off to a solid start with a 69.5 coverage grade in Week 1. Johnson and Staley did not cross paths in Chicago, but a promising talent could be a fit in Los Angeles.

Not the best fit in Matt Eberflus' scheme in Chicago, Johnson has proven his merit as an established outside presence for the Bears secondary for a number of years.

Though the Chargers have also invested heavily into their secondary in recent years, the additions on that side of the ball haven't panned out in the slightest.

From the Patriots, J.C. Jackson's Charger career has been mired in poor play and injury on top of his massive price tag.

Drafted high in the second round, Asante Samuel Jr. hasn't had the chance to show his skills behind veteran Michael Davis, who also struggled in coverage for week 1.

Perhaps it might be a bit of an overreaction to dealing with one of the best receivers in football that Miami has in Tyreek Hill, but over the last few years, defensive breakdowns have been all too common.

Should Johnson hit the market without a tag, he could definitely be an option for LA's secondary in the near future.
