Chargers News: Innovative Jim Harbaugh Weight Training Approach Could Rescue Bolts

The Los Angeles Chargers seem poised to rise like a phoenix from the ashes of their miserable 5-12 season finish in 2023. That is due, in no small part, to new head coach Jim Harbaugh, who seems poised to make huge changes to how everything is run even behind the scenes.

During a new episode of the Bleav In Chargers podcast, NFL Network's Bucky Brooks explained why he's putting so much stock in Harbaugh's approach to reinvigorating the team's coaching ranks, as he relayed to hosts Matt "Money" Smith and former Bolts great Lorenzo Neal.

“"We already know what the blueprint is going to be," Brooks said. "Everyone who has been around Jim Harbaugh knows that the lifeblood of the program is what they do in the weight room. And for the strength coach to... have a press conference, I don't know if I've ever seen a strength and conditioning coach have 30 minutes where he outlines the program. And he talks about how 'we're going to harden them,' I mean... I might have [done] some extra crunches saying, 'Hey, I've got to get ready to see the Chargers!'”

"Anyone who's been around pro football knows that some teams offer the Jane Fonda workout program," Brooks continued. "The whole thing's just to make sure [you] don't get anybody hurt. What I heard from them [is], 'Oh, we're going to treat the weight room like college. We're going to run, we're going to lift, we're going to do that.' I'm [going to] tell you right now, if they put it together like that, it is a huge advantage in pro football, because the most physical team wins, and if they're committed to doing everything to make the Chargers a very physical team, they're absolutely going to win a bunch of games."

The team has plenty of work to do in the draft still, as it offloaded its top two wide receivers in Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, while also moving on from its best running back Austin Ekeler. Pro Bowl quarterback Justin Herbert no doubt hopes this commitment to workouts will help improve the club's rookies ahead of the year, as he will be counting on a fresh offense to help him win games.
