Chargers News: Bolts Favorites to Draft Spectacular SEC Offensive Weapon
The Los Angeles Chargers have become the betting favorites to select Georgia tight end Brock Bowers with the fifth overall pick.
Bowers has already gotten to meet with the Chargers at the NFL Scouting Combine, including speaking with new head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Per DraftKings Sportsbook, the Chargers have the best odds to take Bowers at +225. After the Chargers, the Indianapolis Colts have the second-best odds at +475. The Cincinnati Bengals rank third with +750 odds. The Chicago Bears and New York Jets are tied for fourth with +1000 odds.
Bowers has been one of the primary players projected for the Chargers to take in this draft. Some other popular player projections for the Chargers include wide receiver Malik Nabers and offensive tackle Joe Alt.
Of course, one of the primary reasons there's doubt that the Chargers will take Bowers because the tight end position is not highly valued. Taking a tight end fifth can feel like a reach, but Bowers is a special prospect.
Practically considered a generational-type prospect at the position, Bowers is a unanimous All-American and a two-time John Mackey Award winner, given to the most outstanding tight end in college football. He's received huge honors through each of his three seasons at Georgia, from SEC Freshman of the Year to becoming a two-time national champion.
If the Chargers were to take Bowers, they'd undoubtedly be selecting a top player in this year's draft.
In addition to Bowers' gifts, the Chargers' new offense could favor a strong tight end. Greg Roman-led offenses typically have a top-tier tight end, whether that's Mark Andrews or Vernon Davis. Adding in a player like Bowers could give the Chargers what they're looking for in this offense with a great pass-catcher and run blocker.
