Chargers News: Brandon Staley Breaks Silence On JC Jackson Trade
Former Los Angeles Chargers cornerback J.C. Jackson got traded back to his original team earlier this season after a strange start to his 2023 campaign.
Jackson signed a massive five-year contract in free agency but failed to live up to expectations through two seasons with LA.
Bolts head coach Brandon Staley spoke about the tough choice to let his pricey cornerback go back to the Patriots after a poor showing while in Southern California.
Staley called the deal “the best course for our team” and said the decision to deal Jackson was based on “a body of work to go off of — two years’ worth of a body of work. We believe in that group,” Staley said. “That group is where we’ve played our best football as a team since we’ve been here. We have full trust in those guys. Those guys have played really well together. Now, they get to play together full-time.”
Jackson got benched in his first month with LA after he failed to perform up to expectations to start 2022.
In his first game off the bench later that season, the former undrafted free agent tore a tendon in his knee and missed the remainder of the year to cap a dismal first year as a Charger.
To Jackson's credit, he rehabbed from the injury strong enough to play Week 1 this year but many Chargers fans likely wished he hadn't.
Costly penalties and poor coverage once again sent Jackson to the bench against the Dolphins and he was later deemed a healthy scratch in Week 3 against the Vikings.
With Jackson now back in Foxborough for Bill Belichick's defense, LA is moving on from one of their most regrettable free-agent contracts in recent memory.
