Another Michigan Coach Joining Jim Harbaugh on Chargers Staff
Jim Harbaugh is bringing another coach from Michigan with him to the Los Angeles Chargers. The strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert, is heading to LA, via Alex Insdorf. Herbert is now the second Michigan coach to join Harbaugh on his Chargers staff, after former Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.
Herbert was seen as a vital part of the Wolverines' staff, and someone new Michigan coach Sherrone Moore wanted to keep on his staff. Unfortunately for Moore, Herbert opted to join the Chargers. Herbert started with Michigan back in 2018, where he worked on the staff until 2024.
Herbert was so important to Harbaugh and Michigan, that he was one of the few strength coaches in college football making a salary over $1 million. Harbaugh previously revealed why Herbert was so crucial to Michigan's staff and program success back in 2022.
“He is the X-factor in our football program,” Harbaugh said. “He is the center of player development. He is phenomenal; more than anybody in our entire program. It’s with every player, it’s with every position group."
“His impact on every single player, every single coach — including myself — we say he’s the best."
It was expected that Harbaugh would bring at least some members of his staff from Michigan with him to the NFL, and now he has done so with Minter and Herbert. When Harbaugh previously went from Stanford to the San Francisco 49ers, he did the same by bringing defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to his 49ers staff.
