Broncos Sign Potential New Starting Center

Navigating the waning stages of NFL free agency, the Denver Broncos laid a third brick along the offensive line, signing veteran center Sam Mustipher to a one-year contract, The Denver Post's Parker Gabriel reported Thursday.

The deal has since been confirmed by the team.

Mustipher, 27, is entering his sixth NFL season after going undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2019. The 6-foot-2, 332-pound lineman started 42 games for the Chicago Bears from 2020-2022 and appeared in nine games (two starts) with the Baltimore Ravens last year.

A potential replacement for former starting C Lloyd Cushenberry, now with the Titans, Mustipher will need to fend off competition from Luke Wattenberg and Alex Forsyth — of whom the Broncos are high on.

"We feel good about Wattenberg. We feel really good about Forsyth. ... We do feel like that’s a position we do have the depth and one of those guys could be a starter eventually," general manager George Paton said at February's Scouting Combine.

Mustipher is the seventh outside free agent signed by Denver this offseason, joining safety Brandon Jones, defensive tackle Malcolm Roach, inside linebacker Cody Barton, offensive tackle Matt Peart, wide receiver Josh Reynolds, and offensive guard Calvin Throckmorton.
