Steve Kerr Reacts to Warriors Trading For Chris Paul
The Warriors knew they needed a change after an incredibly tumultuous 2022-23 NBA season. They were historically one of the worst championship road teams in NBA history, barely made it out of the first round, and now have a very short window on maximizing Steph Curry's championship window. The end result was a very shocking Chris Paul trade.
In an interview with The Athletic's Tim Kawakami, Steve Kerr opened up about how the Golden State Warriors needed to make a change after the disappointing season this year. The team knew Chris Paul would be a massive catalyst to incite that change.
“We’re going to be a lot different,” Kerr said . “The last thing I’m going to do is say anything about a team that just won a championship a year ago and then fought through a difficult season. Made a helluva run at the end of this year. I’ve loved this group that we’ve had the last couple years.
But the biggest point is that we sensed we needed a shift. Didn’t mean we needed an overhaul, but we needed a shift of some sort. I think everybody in the organization sensed that. And it feels like we’ve made a pretty significant shift without giving up our identity and our sense of who we are as a team. I think, all in all, it’s a very positive shift.”
The decision to trade Jordan Poole for Chris Paul isn't a minor one for the Warriors. It's going to change their bench presence entirely and make the team play significantly older and slower at times. It's certainly an x-factor decision where the results won't truly be known until it's seen in person. One thing is for sure though, the Warriors will be a fascinating team to watch this upcoming season.
