Lakers News: LA's Newest Addition on Why He Chose The Purple and Gold
Coming into the offseason, just what the Los Angeles Lakers would do in free agency was one of the top storylines surrounding the team.
Would they re-sign Rui Hachimura and Austin Reaves? Would they let D'Angelo Russell walk on the heels of a disappointing Western Conference Finals? How would Rob Pelinka handle LA's mid-level exception?
All those players listed above are now locked up in the purple and gold, and as for the MLE, the Lakers GM got quite a coup.
Los Angeles agreed to a three-year, $33 million deal with Gabe Vincent in the initial stages of free agency, and the sides officially put pen to paper on Thursday at the end of the NBA's moratorium.
The former Miami Heat guard was introduced this week, and not only does the UC Santa Barbara product seem happy to be back with his hometown team, he also thinks he can provide quite the value for LA.
Vincent explained why he signed with the Lakers during his first press conference as an official member of the purple and gold on Thursday.
“They have size, athleticism, and leadership. I can bring defense and make my open shots while impacting winning with any group on the floor.” (Gabe Vincent via Speak Context)
Vincent proved to be quite the asset for Miami in their surprising run to the NBA Finals, averaging 12.7 points and 3.5 assists per game this postseason. Additionally, he shot nearly 38 percent from deep in the playoffs, a trait that should help a Lakers team that was in desperate need of a three point shooting threat.
Vincent will help on the offensive end, but he's also a quality on-ball defender, filling another need for LA as they try to bolster their lackluster perimeter defense.
The signing of Gabe Vincent should provide a good return on investment for the Lakers, and the guard himself thinks that he can be a quality addition to a strong group.
