Knicks 'Excited' About Two-Way Rookie Jaylen Martin

Jaylen Martin has the New York Knicks excited about his potential and development.

The New York Knicks didn't draft any prospects from the 2023 NBA Draft class, but they added a player they really like in Overtime Elite guard Jaylen Martin.

Martin, 19, signed a two-way deal with the Knicks and could have an opportunity to develop into a solid NBA player for New York. The Charlie Ward protege got to play the hero in the Knicks' first Summer League win on Wednesday night, sinking the game-winner in overtime to cap off a comeback victory over the Orlando Magic at 82-80.

“We’re excited about Jaylen Martin’s potential," an anonymous Knicks source told Spotrac's Keith Smith. "He’s got a lot of work to do, and he’ll spend a good amount of time in the G League. But all of the potential is there for him to eventually become a rotation player. He’s one of the youngest guys from this draft class, so there’s a long runway.”

Martin may not be an immediate contributor for the Knicks, especially given the team's desire to contend this upcoming season. However, New York doesn't have a single draft pick from the past two years currently on the roster. The team did have 2022 second-round choice Trevor Keels on the roster last year under a two-way contract but he played in only three NBA games and has yet to re-sign.

Having some kind of youth movement, even if it is just one or two players, is crucial for every team's long-term well-being. Martin was signed with the hope of being a steal a few years down the line, and if he puts in the work, he could be just that.
