2017 NBA draft grades: Thunder go for high upside, outside shooting in Terrance Ferguson

Oklahoma City finished 47-35 in the regular season and fell in the first round of the playoffs to the Rockets in a 4-1 series loss. Most, if not all, of the Thunder's success this year was thanks to the supernatural performance of MVP front-runner Russell Westbrook.

Last year, the Thunder drafted Domantas Sabonis with their first–round pick after a trade with the Magic. That deal sent Serge Ibaka to Orlando and cash to Denver, in exchange for the No. 11 pick, Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova, as well as the No. 56 pick from the Nuggets.

In this year's draft, the Thunder will look to provide Westbrook with a piece that might be able to share a bit of the offensive load down the line.

Round 1, Pick 21 (No. 21 overall): Terrance Ferguson

Ferguson shut down his workouts late in the predraft process and was believed to have a promise somewhere in the first round. The Thunder may have been that promise. OKC takes a nice upside swing here in a draft where three-point shooting is at a premium. Ferguson is still raw after a year of pro ball in Australia, but can really shoot it and brings some added athleticism on the wing. He needs time to develop his game off the dribble and put on weight. The Thunder could have gone a more win-now route for Russell Westbrook’s sake, but this is a measured long-term play on one of the higher-upside players available.
