Star Reinforcements Reportedly On Way For Red Sox As Trevor Story, Chris Sale Near Return
The Boston Red Sox will have two of their brightest stars back in the not-so-distant future.
Speculation has been swirling about when shortstop Trevor Story and left-handed starting pitcher Chris Sale ultimately would return and they both reportedly will be back with the club this week, according to the Boston Globe's Alex Speier.
"Trevor Story will be activated tomorrow," Speier said. "(Red Sox manager Alex Cora) says Sale likely starts Friday, and (Garrett Whitlock) will pitch Wednesday in Worcester (3 innings) then likely be activated on Sunday for the bullpen. (Tanner Houck) will be in Worcester Thursday."
Story has missed the entire 2023 campaign so far but could provide a significant boost to a club that certainly needs it right now. The two-time All-Star has impressed throughout his rehab assignment with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox and in 10 games has slashed .313/.421/.719 to go along with three home runs and six RBIs.
The return of Sale to the starting rotation couldn't come at a better time, as well. Boston's rotation has been thin lately leading to the club having to roll with openers lately. Sale -- like Story -- has been impressive on his rehab assignment with Worcester and in two starts has yet to allow a run across 6 1/3 innings pitched.
Boston has been slumping lately, but realistically still are in contention for a postseason spot. The return of Story and Sale certainly raises Boston's chances. Plus, with Whitlock and Houck nearing returns to the big league club as well, things may be finally looking up for the Red Sox.
