Red Sox's Craig Breslow Open To 'Meaningfully Upgrading' At Second Base
Although the Boston Red Sox have depth at second base, there may be changes on the way.
Newly hired chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has made it known that he's ready to upgrade the Red Sox's roster, and that goes for any position he sees fit.
“We’re kind of comfortable with the four we have," Breslow told Masslive's Sean McAdam regarding the second base position. “We can attack that in a number of different ways. We’ve got some right-handed depth, some left-handed depth. But also, like everywhere else, we’re going to be open-minded about the possibilities of meaningfully upgrading that position. And it is no secret that we weren’t good enough on the defensive side of the ball. I think we continue to look at ways to raise the floor there.”
The Red Sox have Pablo Reyes, Enmanuel Valdez, Luis Urias and David Hamilton as primary middle infielders on the 40-man roster. Ceddanne Rafaela is an option as well.
Reyes, Valdez and Rafaela are the top three options as Urias has been widely deemed a non-tender candidate and Hamilton does not appear to be a star in the making.
There aren't many free agents available at second base that would fit Breslow's "meaningful upgrade" comment, meaning if anything an addition would most likely come via trade.
