Son Of Former Texas Rangers Pitcher Leads Chiefs To Consecutive Super Bowl Titles
Pat Mahomes Sr. brought his family back to Texas in 2001 when he pitched for the Texas Rangers for one season. His son, Patrick Mahomes II, was just six and beginning his athletic career.
Now, the son of the former Texas Rangers reliever has further eclipsed his father’s baseball accomplishments after leading the Kansas City Chiefs to the Super Bowl LVIII title, 25-22, in overtime on Sunday over the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.
Mahomes threw for 333 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. He led the Chiefs to a game-tying field goal in the final two minutes of regulation and the game-winning touchdown drive on their first overtime possession.
Mahomes threw a touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman with three seconds left in the first overtime to win the game. The Chiefs are the first to win consecutive Super Bowls since the 2004 New England Patriots.
Mahomes Sr, a Lindale, Texas, native, was a sixth-round pick in 1988 when he came out of Lindale High School. He eventually broke in with the Minnesota Twins in 1992 and made his way to Texas as a free agent before the 2001 season.
With the Rangers, he was 7-6 with a 5.70 ERA in 56 appearances (four starts) over 107 innings, the most he had pitched in a season since 120 innings with Minnesota in 1994.
Two years later, in 2003, after playing his final season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Mahomes was out of baseball.
His son is now the fifth quarterback in history to win at least three Super Bowl titles as a starter.
Mahomes II is a two-time NFL MVP, an NFL Offensive Player of the Year, a two-time First Team All-Pro selection, a six-time Pro Bowl selection and the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year in 2020.
He’s already thrown for 28,424 yards, 219 touchdowns and 63 interceptions in the regular season.
