Phillies Reportedly Linked to Free Agent Ace Following Postseason Heroics

The Philadelphia Phillies could pursue one of the heroes of the Texas Rangers following their magical World Series run.

The Philadelphia Phillies seem to be missing just that one extra piece to get them over the edge to another World Series title.

After 2022, it seemed like adding a superstar middle infielder like Trea Turner would be the missing puzzle piece.

Now, it seems having another bonafide, battle tested veteran starter is the answer.

Despite what happens to Aaron Nola and his status with the team, another capable arm that can slot in near the top of the rotation will be paramount. Especially so if Nola walks in free agency.

According to The Athletic, Texas Rangers World Series hero Jordan Montgomery just might be that guy as they have linked him to the Phillies.

Montgomery posted a 3.20 ERA and 1.193 WHIP in 188.2 innings pitched in 2023 between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Rangers. He was even better in the bright lights and the big moments of the postseason where he compiled a 2.79 ERA in 11 starts.

The lefty played a pivotal role in the Rangers' capture of their first World Series championship in franchise history. And now, postseason tested, the 30-year-old is hitting the open market.

The article suggests that Montgomery will ink a contract in the ballpark of five-years, $127 million. At just over $25 million a year, it's a fair price for a top starter who has the stuff to play well past his age-35 season, barring any injury scare.

For Philadelphia, adding a player who has shown he can stay healthy for innings during the regular season and then has the mettle to not melt under pressure are two incredible qualities to have.

It's a perfect fit in nearly every sense of the word, regardless of Aaron Nola's future.
