Philadelphia Phillies Continue to Look for Outfield Upgrade
The Philadelphia Phillies announced that outfielder Brandon Mash had arthroscopic knee surgery on his left knee before spring training.
Marsh is expected to return in three to four weeks and to be ready for Opening Day.
While the injury doesn't create a need to add another starting outfielder, the Phillies are reportedly looking for outfield depth. Bob Nightengale of USA Today writes that the Phillies aren't looking for a Cody Bellinger-type replacement for Marsh.
Marsh's injury only hurts the Phillies in that he'll be behind the rest of the team as the regular season approaches.
But it does give more playing time to other internal candidates while the team is going through its paces in Clearwater.
Johan Rojas is likely to be the team's Opening Day center fielder, according to Dave Dombrowski. That could be a sign that Marsh will move over to left field in 2024.
The 40-man roster has six outfielders with Marsh, including two of the worst defensive outfielders in baseball in Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber.
Outside of Bellinger, other names could make an impact for Philadelphia. Jorge Soler, who's one of the best hitters remaining on the market, is also a below-average defender. It's uncertain if Dombrowski is looking for an offensive or defensive upgrade.
Another interesting name is Whit Merrifield. Merrifield has been rumored as a potential target and he has experience in the outfield. The 35-year-old was an All-Star in 2023, earning the honor for the third time in his career.
He shouldn't cost much, which could play a factor in the decision the Phillies decide to make.
The season is right around the corner, so if a move was to happen, expect it soon.
