Padres News: Ji-Man Choi Recalled as Another Veteran Placed on Injured List

Choi returns after spending roughly a month on the IL.

The San Diego Padres placed designated hitter Matt Carpenter on the 10-day injured list Friday with elbow inflammation. Carpenter last played Sunday and has gone 2-for-10 with a home run in the month of September. For the season, Carpenter is batting just .176 with five home runs and 31 RBIs.

In a corresponding move, the Padres recalled infielder/designated hitter Ji-Man Choi from the 10-day injured list. Choi has had an extended stay on the IL after initially suffering a left rib strain and landing on the list Aug. 14. After suffering a fractured ankle during a rehab game at Triple-A El Paso, Choi's time on the IL was extended.

Choi has been cleared to resume playing and went 4-for-25 with an RBI and run scored across seven rehab games. In seven games with San Diego, Choi is 0-for-11 with five walks and three runs scored.

While the Padres season is essentially over in terms of playoff implications, recalling Choi could give him a shot to convince either San Diego or another team to sign him to a long-term contract. He is currently on a 1-year, $4.6 million deal initially signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

San Diego travels to Oakland Friday night to begin the first of three games against the Athletics.
