Padres News: Bob Melvin Maintaining the Focus for Friars Following Another Loss in Extras

The Padres fall to 0-12 in extra innings and the Cinderella story took a hit.

The Padres lost again in extra innings Saturday night, this time to the St. Louis Cardinals. While they avenged the loss with a 12-2 win Sunday, the Padres would surely like to see another win streak start back up if they want to have an outside chance at a spot in the NL Wild Card.

“We’re gonna have to,” said manager Bob Melvin. “We’re not thinking too much about that, and we haven’t been. We’ve just been thinking about winning games, and we have to continue to win games. When you lose a game with how many we have left, it stings, but we just have to go out there and continue to try to win every game the rest of the way like we have been to this point.”

Nick Martinez, who started the game and pitched four innings, only allowing a pair of hits and no runs, said that there were positives the Padres could take away from the loss.

“It hurts, but truthfully, I like the way our guys fought today,” starting pitcher Nick Martinez said. “You may look at the overall, 0-12 now, and the timing of it. I think regardless of all that, I really love the way our guys fought. And even if, you know, worst-case scenario, we fall short this year, if we can remember this feeling, remember these last two weeks of playing, I think we can be really dangerous next year.”

That "worst-case scenario" is likely to come true if the Padres aren't able to pull off what would be a miraculous push to the playoffs that would likely require complete breakdowns from four of the six teams currently ahead in the standings.

Nevertheless, the Padres will continue their 2023 season Monday when they travel to play San Francisco at 6:45 p.m. PDT.
