WATCH: Braves jump out to early lead, but big inning fizzles after a controversial play
After a rain delay in Boston, the Braves did that thing they do so well - score in the first inning. This, however, was perhaps the most unconventional opening frame we've seen this season.
Ozzie Albies was hit by a pitch from Boston opener John Schreiber, and then advanced to third on a bloop single from NL Player of the Week Austin Riley. Matt Olson followed with a walk to load the bases, and the recently slumping Sean Murphy stepped up to the plate.
Murphy smashed a single into the hole past short, bringing Ozzie home and staking the Braves and Charlie Morton to a 1-0 lead. Marcell Ozuna then came to the plate, and things got weird.
On a 2-2 pitch, he hit a soft liner to second that Christian Arroyo believed he caught in the air, with the infielder then moving to second base to record another out there. Umpire Mike Estabrook initially appeared to rule that the ball hit the ground, though it's likely he was really ruling a retreating Matt Olson safe at second. Either way, Arroyo was taken by surprise and threw the ball away while trying to double up Sean Murphy at first. Austin Riley scampered home to seemingly give the Braves a 2-0 lead with the bases still loaded.
Arroyo and the Red Sox protested, and after an umpires' conference, the blues ruled that Arroyo had indeed caught the ball in the air, so Ozuna was called out. They also decided that Riley hadn't tagged up. Boston appealed to third, and Riley was also called out. The inning was bafflingly over with the Braves only being credited with the run Albies scored.
