The Toronto Blue Jays will be without Steven Matz for the next little while.

The team placed the 30-year-old left-hander on the COVID-related injured list Sunday afternoon. He is symptom-free, but an inconclusive test rest has forced the team to conduct further testing.

The move comes just one day after Matz pitched 5.2 innings surrendering just one run against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.

Matz had been one of Toronto's pleasant surprises to start the season. He pitched to a 2.31 ERA in his first four starts of the season, but it's been a little bit up and down since then. Coming into Saturday's game, Matz had allowed 26 earned runs over 40.2 innings pitched (5.75 ERA) over his last eight starts.

In his place, the Blue Jays have promoted right-hander Jeremy Beasley from Triple-A Buffalo. The 25-year-old reliever has made five appearances with Toronto this season, allowing five earned runs over 6.2 innings. In the minors, he's made two appearances this season and has yet to allow a run.

The Blue Jays have reached the 85% vaccine uptake threshold as of earlier in the month, manager Charlie Montoyo said.
