This wasn't what the Blue Jays wanted.

After several simulated games at Toronto's spring training complex in Florida, Alek Manoah made his return to the mound Tuesday — and, boy were the results ugly.

The right-hander allowed 11 earned runs through 2.2 innings. The FCL Yankees teed off the Jays' former ace, ripping 10 hits, including two home runs. He also struck out three hitters and issued two walks. Most of the hitters Manoah faced were under 20 years old.

It's been a hard season to fathom as Manoah keeps sinking lower and lower. He broke out in 2022, earning an AL Cy Young finalist nod, but pitched awful in 2023, posting a 6.36 ERA in 13 outings with a 6.5 BB/9.

Initially, the Blue Jays said Manoah was trending positively through his simulated games. Now, after this clunker of an outing, a lot of that progress will be set back.

Manoah will get another crack, likely again at the FCL level, and he'll need to be a lot sharper if he hopes to return to the majors anytime soon.
