deGrom Injury Gives Houston Astros Chance of Taking Division Crown

The Houston Astros have a legitimate change of taking over the division lead in the American League West.
Unfortunately, at least for Texas Rangers fans, starting pitcher Jacob deGrom just can’t stay healthy.
The 34-year-old, who has been phenomenal for the Rangers this season, is the latest Major League Baseball pitcher to be lost to season-ending surgery.
Prior to the injury, deGrom posted a 2.67 ERA with a 2-0 record over six games (30.1 innings pitched) with 45 strikeouts and a 0.76 WHIP.
With the loss of deGrom to Tommy John surgery, the Rangers hopes of clinging to the AL West hang in the balance — with the suddenly streaking Astros nipping at the heels of their intrastate rivals.
And now is the time for Houston to take advantage of Texas’ latest injury.
Starting pitching injuries have been quite common in 2023, as the Astros have dealt with numerous pitcher ailments throughout the season and continue to deal with ongoing issues.
Regardless of Houston’s starting pitching setbacks, the Astros have found a way to continue competing in a tough division — thanks in a large part to young rookies taking to the hill and performing remarkably well.
Will Houston soon garner the division lead, or do the Rangers have enough depth to sustain deGrom’s injury and remain in control?
If the Astros can continue their offensive surge and pick up some much-needed wins over the next 10 days, they very well may be in the division lead come next weekend.
They’re definitely talented enough to do so.
