Angels News: Reid Detmers Ends Season Strong, Feels Good Heading Into Offseason
Angels pitcher Reid Detmers entered the season with high hopes of having another solid year. After all, he looked very good during his rookie season, so the expectation was for him to improve on things.
Last year over 25 games, Detmers had an ERA of 3.77 and a WHIP of 1.21. He was one of the breakout players for the franchise, and they were very excited for his development moving forward.
This season, he posted an ERA of 4.48 and a WHIP of 1.35. He saw his ERA get elevated throughout the year, and he made his final start of the season on Tuesday where he ended things on a good note. He went seven innings, allowing just one run and four hits to the Texas Rangers. Detmers also struck out seven batters in the game.
“Obviously, the season didn’t really go as planned,” Detmers said. “There’s been a lot of ups and downs. Not just speaking for myself, but for the whole team too. Obviously, it’s been a disappointing year, but for myself, I struggled at times, but I’ve proven that I can bounce back. To end the season on that kind of note, against a really good ball club is always nice. It lets you go into the offseason a little bit easier on yourself.”
Detmers can now enter into the offseason feeling good about things. He knows that he left some stuff on the table this year, but he should be encouraged by his last few starts.
“It tells you how good he can be,” Manager Phil Nevin said. “That’s a really good lineup. They’ve been swinging the bats well and they really left-handers well.”
The Angels pitcher is still only 24 years old, so there is plenty of time to keep improving on things. He will be entering his third full season in the big leagues, and he now knows what it takes to compete at this level.
It will be a big offseason for all involved, but the confidence gained should only keep helping him. Detmers just needs to stay consistent throughout the season, and if he can do that, the Angels will be in good shape moving forward.
