Angels Linked to 2023 All-Star Starting Pitcher in Free Agency
The Los Angeles Angels' search for another starting pitcher continues. This time, The New York Post's Jon Heyman connects All-Star Michael Lorenzen to the Halos.
"The Twins, Padres, Red Sox and Angels are considering the starter market. Things are heating up for 2023 All-Star Mike Lorenzen, with those teams possible landing spots."
Lorenzen, 32, grew up in Fullerton, attending Fullerton Union High School and Cal. State Fullerton. The right-hander finished last year with the Philadelphia Phillies after the Detroit Tigers flipped him at the deadline.
Last year, he had a 4.18 ERA in 25 starts, highlighted by a no-hitter on Aug. 9. Interestingly, he struggled mightily after throwing the no-hitter.
In the 20 starts leading up to and including the no-hitter, he had a 3.23 ERA and 3.84 FIP. Afterward, in nine appearances, his ERA skyrocketed to 8.01. The Phillies felt it necessary to send the right-hander to the bullpen just five starts after his historic moment.
It's entirely possible that arm fatigue set in after throwing 124 pitches in the no-hit effort. Whatever the case might have been, he was an entirely different pitcher afterward.
The Angels would hope to acquire the pitcher with the 3.23 ERA. Perhaps a return home and an offseason of rest can bring him back to form.
