Los Angeles Angels' Rookie Continues to Ascend Up History Books on Opening Day
The Los Angeles Angels were drubbed by the Baltimore Orioles on Opening Day on Thursday, but rookie Nolan Schanuel continued a historic streak that he began last year by reaching base yet again.
The Los Angeles Angels were drubbed by the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday afternoon, falling 11-3 on Opening Day.
The Angels, who lost Shohei Ohtani this offseason, are projected to finish fourth in the American League West this season.
However, there were some bright spots as Mike Trout hit his first home run of 2024 and rookie Nolan Schanuel continued a historic start to his career which began late last season.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Most consecutive games reaching base safely to start career, since 1900:
1984 Alvin Davis: 47
1918 Truck Hannah: 38
2023-24 Nolan Schanuel: 30*
1938 Enos Slaughter: 29
* = active streak extended today

After being drafted just last year, Schaunel made the unprecedented jump to the big leagues after just weeks in the minors. Now, he's a .275 career hitter with one homer and six career RBI. He was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored on Thursday.
Because he has played enough games, he has already graduated out of the Angels' top prospect list on MLB.com.
The Angels and Orioles have an off day on Friday but the the two sides will play again on Saturday afernoon at Camden Yards. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET as Griffin Canning (LAA) pitches against rookie Grayson Rodriguez (BAL).
The Orioles won 101 games last season and captured the American League East crown. With one of the best young cores in all of baseball, they are expected to be in position to do the same thing in 2024. They could even be a true World Series contender.
