Los Angeles Angels Earn First Win of 2024 as Rookie Continues Historic Streak

The Los Angeles Angels earned their first win of the season on Sunday as rookie Nolan Schanuel continued an on-base streak that has him chasing baseball history.

The Los Angeles Angels beat the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday afternoon, 4-1, to earn their first win of the 2024 season.

In the victory, the Halos got five solid innings on the mound from Reid Detmers, who struck out seven and allowed just two hits. In addition, they also got a home run from Taylor Ward, which was his second of the season. The Angels had six hits in all, including one from rookie Nolan Schanuel.

Schanuel, a first-round draft pick just last season, made his debut at the end of 2023 and has continued the historic start to his career.

Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com on social media:

Most consecutive games reaching base safely to start career, since 1900:

1984 Alvin Davis: 47
1918 Truck Hannah: 38
2023-24 Nolan Schanuel: 32*
1938 Enos Slaughter: 29

* = active streak extended today

Schanuel's career arc is already fascinating, as he played just weeks in the minor leagues last season before getting his shot at the Majors. Now, he's hitting at the top of a Major League order. Off to a slow start through the first three games of the year, he's hitting .200 with one RBI. Not known for his power yet, he's a .275 career hitter with one home run and six RBI.

After losing Shohei Ohtani this offseason, the Angels are projected to finish fourth in the American League West, so Schanuel should get plenty of opportunity to continue to grow this season.

The Angels continue their season-opening road trip on Monday when they take on the Miami Marlins at 6:40 p.m. ET.
