Cleveland Guardians Using Offensive Outbursts to Make History Books in First Week
The Cleveland Guardians are out to a 3-0 start this season, with the offense putting up historic numbers in the first week.
The Cleveland Guardians are out to a 3-0 start this season under first-year manager Stephen Vogt, and they are putting up historic numbers through the first week of the season.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
the Guardians’ +19 run differential is the best thru the 1st 3 games of a season in franchise history
prior highest: +15 in 1999 & 1922
Yes, the Guardians are boosted by playing against the lowly Oakland Athletics over these first games, but still, the offensive output is impressive.
Cleveland won 8-0 on Opening Day, then won 6-4 on Friday night and put up a 12-3 victory on Saturday.
David Fry is out to a blistering .667 start at the plate, and three other members of the Guardians are hitting .300 or better thus far.
It's a year of unknown for the Guardians, who are playing for a new manager after Terry Francona's retirement in the offseason. As they move forward, they still have stalwart Jose Ramirez and are continuing to see growth from Josh Naylor, Bo Naylor and Andres Gimenez.
Furthermore, the Guardians have excellent starting pitching and should be able to remain competitive in a relatively mediocre American League Central. While the Tigers and Royals look to be improved and the Twins are the reigning division champs, no team is massively better than Cleveland at this point.
The Guardians will wrap up their series against the Athletics on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 4:07 p.m. ET as Carlos Carrasco pitches against Paul Blackburn.
