What Randy Mazey Said Following the Series Win Over BYU

West Virginia University head coach Randy Mazey BYU postgame quick hits

The West Virginia Mountaineers (9-7, 2-1) shut out the BYU Cougars in the series finale 2-0 to take the Big 12 opening series.

West Virginia capturing its first series win of the season

We just played hard considering where we are right now, considering what we've been through, I can't imagine there's another team out there that has gone through what we've gone through to this point and to be where we are is pretty impressive.

Derek Carter's five innings, allowing just one hit

That was like opening day for him because he hasn't pitched and we had him on a pitch count that he didn't know about because he told me for the game, said, ‘don't you put me on a pitch count,’ but we had to. But for him to go out and do what he did, that's what we thought we were getting when he came here. That bodes well for the rest of the season if he can keep doing that.

He's new to the program, but he's got unbelievable competitiveness, unbelievable leadership skills, He's an unbelievable teammate, he deserves to have the success that he's having. He just pitches quick, he throws strikes, he's easy to play defense behind because of that and he pours his heart out onto the field every time he tows the rubber.

Robby Porco, Gavin Van Kempen and Oliver Hambleton combining for four scoreless innings of relief

They're growing up. It's Porco’s first outing. What that kid's gone through is unbelievable, but to get him to get a couple of outs in a close game, in conference, will give him confidence. Van Kempen’ been pitching really, really well lately. And now, that we're going on three game weekends, we can put all those guys in the same game instead of spreading them out over a couple of games
