Utah and Northwestern To Make College Football History On Saturday
During the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday, Utah and Northwestern will both be a part of history, in a move that can end up changing college football forever.
According to a report by Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger, their game will be the first time that both smart tablets on the sidelines, and coach-to-player helmet communications on the fieldm will be used in the same game. With college football figuring out ways to better the sport and become more modern, coaches and players have been clamoring for this technology for quite some time.
It also became a more prevalent discussion following Michigan's sign-stealing scandal.
Fellow Big 12 program Texas Tech was able to test out the helmet communication during their game against Cal.
Eight helmets had the communication technology, with both the starting quarterback and backup quarterback having it on offense, while six defenders had it as well.
According to Dellenger, the two biggest questions that arise when looking at the future of this tech is how long coaches would be able to communicate with players who have the helmet. The other question is regarding how many players should be able to wear.
In the NFL, communication is cut off once the play clock hits 15 seconds, and there is just one player on each side of the ball who has the helmet mic. When all of this will come together and be approved by the NCAA Rules Committee is unclear, but coaches like Nick Saban, Justin Wilcox, and Joey McGuire all seem to be on board.
