USC Football: Caleb Williams Faces New Heisman Contender After His Standout Week 6 Performance
Trojan QB Caleb Williams' Heisman case continues to grow through USC's undefeated start to the 2023 season after six games.
Yet to lose a game, Williams may have some new competition for his repeat Heisman after another SEC signal-caller dominated his school's biggest rival in Week 6.
Dillon Gabriel, QB, Oklahoma: Gabriel put together his signature moment over the weekend. After putting up gaudy numbers on the Sooners' comfortable path to 5-0, he threw for 285 yards, rushed for a career-high 113 and totaled two scores—including a last-minute winning pass—in the triumph over Texas. OU is idle in Week 7 before hosting UCF.
The Sooners took the most recent edition of the Red River showdown, largely thanks to Gabriel's heroics down the stretch.
Oklahoma held a big lead against the Longhorns before running back Jonathan Brooks, and kicker scored 13 unanswered to put Texas back up by 3 with under 90 seconds to go.
Gabriel executed the 2-minute drill to perfection and completed four of five passes to drive his team to the end zone on the final drive.
A three-yard touchdown pass sealed an Oklahoma victory and pushed the third-ranked Longhorns down to ninth in the AP Polls.
Now fifth in the nation, the Sooners rose seven spots with the victory and surpassed USC in the top 25 with a big statement win.
Gabriel now heads into his bye week with nearly 1,900 yards passing and 16 touchdown passes compared to just two interceptions.
Williams' victory against another Pac-12 opponent didn't come easy for the third week in a row as USC's defense once again put the Heisman winner behind the 8-ball.
The Trojans remain in the AP Top 10, but their national title hopes rest on the shoulders of their defense picking up the slack.
In the meantime, Williams is still doing everything he can to prove why he's the No. 1 overall prospect in next year's NFL Draft.
