USC Basketball: Insider Deems Possible Extension For All-Star Ex-Trojan A "No-Win" For Both Sides

Will he remain with the franchise?

DeMar DeRozan finds himself in one of the most interesting situations in the NBA right now. The veteran swingman was able to re-establish himself as one of the best scorers and closers in the league when he first touched down with the Chicago Bulls but after a number of injuries to important teammates along with some early season exits, the team may look to move in a different direction.

DeRozan has come a long way ever since he suited up for the USC Trojans. He has six All-Star appearances, made All-NBA on two different occasions and became one of the most beloved Toronto Raptors stars of all time. Bulls point guard Lonzo Ball recently spoke on the state of the organization and revealed that he feels bad for Chicago's front office because his knee troubles led to them never seeing the full potential of their 2021 squad.

However, DeRozan potentially has quite the payday ahead of him as enters into his mid 30's and ESPN's Tim Bontemps believes that neither side will benefit from him receiving it. He could net a new contract worth up to $179 million over four years with the Bulls at any point this season, or he could opt to wait and become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2024.

"DeRozan will be 35 next season, and is now eligible to ink a four-year, $179 contract extension with Chicago. Without a new deal, the veteran guard is set to hit unrestricted free agency next offseason. According to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, this is setting up a “no win situation” for Chicago. On a recent episode of the “Hoop Collective” Podcast, the hosts suggested signing DeRozan to a longer deal could be a disaster, but losing him for nothing in free agency is not a great situation either."

As his career goes on, DeRozan will have to make the best decision when it comes to his finances and also competitive goals. We'll have to see how this season plays out and if he remains in Chicago.
