Cai Bates Narrows Recruitment, Includes Vols Before Visit To Knoxville

2024 four-star corner Cai Bates cut his list down to ten schools, and he remains high on the Tennessee Volunteers.

Cai Bates is a four-star out of Edgewater High School in Orlando, Florida. The class of 2024 cornerback stands 6-1.5 and weighs 180 pounds. Just eight days ago, he announced an official visit to Knoxville for the weekend of June 16-18, which is a busy weekend for recruiting in Knoxville. Bates has 43 offers, including the one he received from Tennessee in March of this year when he took an unofficial visit. On Wednesday, however, he trimmed his list down to 10, retweeting Hayes Fawcett's announcement of this move. In addition to Tennessee, he named Alabama, Florida, LSU, and Texas A&M from the SEC. The other schools are Florida State and UCF from his home state, as well as Ohio State, Colorado, and Maryland. Bates is set to visit Tuscaloosa June 2-4 and Baton Rouge June 23-25.

Bates is relatively new to the cornerback position, having made the switch in his junior season. Still, he also saw some action at wide receiver in 2022. Going forward, however, he is seen as a cornerback, where he should see great growth as he continues to learn the ins and outs of an extremely difficult position. This is especially true if he chooses to play in the SEC, as offensive coordinators will come at you with physicality time and time again. Already, though, he tracks the ball well, which is something that does not come naturally to all corners. As he takes multiple SEC visits in June, including one to Knoxville, we will see how his recruitment progresses.
