The Tennessee Volunteers have officially concluded their annual Orange and White spring game.
The Tennessee Volunteers are officially done with spring football. The orange team squeaked out a four-point victory over the white team, 21-17. We got to see many different young players and new transfer perform in front of Neyland Stadium. There was a lot of energy in the building, as there's much excitment surronding this team.
The story of the day is the performance of freshman wide receiver Mike Matthews. Matthews scored a long touchdown and consistently separated from defensive backs downfield. He also made key blocks on the edge that allowed receivers to generate easy yardage on Tennessee's touted screen passes.
Quarterbacks Gaston Moore and Jake Merklinger played well throughout the day. Nico Iamaleava didn't get a ton of reps, as they wanted to see what depth they have at that position. Merklinger looked calm throughout the afternoon, making concise reads while also pushing the ball downfield.
Several freshman defenders, namely safety Boo Carter, made some big stops throughout the afternoon as well.
