Vols Pitching Struggles Against Southern Miss
Tennessee starting pitcher Andrew Lindsey got the go-ahead against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. It was his second start of the postseason. The first start for Lindsey in the tournament came in the opening game of the Clemson regional against Charlotte. In that game, he finished by giving up one earned run and had ten strikeouts in 7 innings pitched.
He also earned that win which was his third of the year. Lindsey has been a great pitcher all season for the Volunteers. In 63.2 innings pitched, he has a 2.40 ERA. He has 64 strikeouts throughout that span. Lindsey also has an allowed a .209 opener batting average this season, a phenomenal mark.
Despite a great performance in the region and throughout the season, Lindsey struggled against the Golden Eagles lineup to begin the super regional in Hattiesburg. In 4 innings, the Vols right-hander gave up six hits and four earned runs. Two of the six hits Lindsey gave up were home runs to Southern Miss infielders Nick Monistere and Dustin Dickerson. The two players homered in the 4th and 3rd inning, respectively. Both were solo shots.
Before both innings, Lindsey also had a shaky start to the game in the top of the first inning. With runners on first and second, he gave up a two-run triple to Southern Miss outfielder Tate Parker. The Golden Eagles went up 2-0 before the Volunteers could even swing a bat. It was not the start Lindsey or the Volunteers wanted to the super regional round. After the upset exit in last season's super regional round the Vols suffered, they are most certainly looking to change their fortunes this time.
