Scouting Tennessee's Super Regional Opponent: Southern Miss
The Tennessee Volunteers and Southern Miss Golden Eagles will battle it out for a right to play in Omaha for the College World Series. The Vols were victorious in the Clemson Regional. Meanwhile, Southern Miss came out on top in the Auburn Regional.
The Golden Eagles earned their bid to the super-regional round following an 11-7 win over Penn on Monday. They went 4-1 overall in Auburn, beating Penn twice to clinch the regional and defeating Auburn and Samford both once. They lost their initial game to Samford 4-2 in extra innings. The Golden Eagles also had an impressive run differential of 40-19 while in Auburn. Southern Miss is no slouch of a team. They are 45-18 overall and won the Sun Belt tournament. Against SEC teams in the regular season, they went 0-3 against Alabama, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State. Statistically, the Golden Eagles are a sound team. They combined for a team batting average of .286 and have a combined team on-base percentage of .394. They currently have four hitters in double figures for home runs.
Junior outfielder Slade Wilks leads the team in home runs with 20. However, he only went 3-17 in at-bats during the Auburn regional. When pitching, Southern Miss' go-to arm is right-hander Tanner Hall. He has had a stunning 2022-23 season with a 2.08 ERA in 108.0 innings pitched. He also has a great record of 12-3 and a high strikeout total of 119. Hall has only given up five home runs all season. Hall has pitched two complete games this season and went nine innings recently in the Golden Eagles' loss against Samford during the regional round. He also holds lineups to very limited hits, putting up a .202 allowed opponent batting average. The Vols look to make it to Omaha for the sixth time in program history.
