Clemson Rallies Late, Vols Will Face Them In Second Round
The Atlantic Sun Champions put up a fight, but as expected, Clemson is moving on to start the Clemson Regional. The Tigers overcame a few big flies in the middle innings with a big eighth inning to down Lipscomb 12-5 and got within just two wins of a regional championship.
The Tigers got off to a roaring start in the first as a Caden Grice homer gave the number 4 overall seed a 2-0 lead. After the two-run shot, Lipscomb pitcher Logan Van Treeck was able to battle and only gave up two more earned runs in the next five innings to keep the Bison in the game. Lipscomb made it very interesting in the 5th by taking their only lead of the game after back-to-back homers by Caleb Ketchup and Alex Vergara. Vergara also hit a home run in the 6th to tie the game.
However, after manufacturing a couple of runs to take a 7-5 lead, Clemson got their big inning to blow the doors open. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers got an RBI single from Cooper Ingle, walks from Will Taylor and Caden Grice, and then a grand slam from Billy Amick to take down the Bison in a game that was closer than the final score would indicate. Lipscomb will try to keep their season alive tomorrow at noon eastern in the elimination bracket, while the hosts will play in the winners' bracket at 6 P.M. eastern. The stage is set for Tennessee to take on the Tigers again, this time in baseball.
