Non-Big 12 Baseball: Plenty Of Movement Across The Country
In the last 14 days, the baseball world turned its attention to the World Baseball Classic. Though it is the equivalent to baseball’s “world cup” it did not pause the ongoing college season.
The last two weeks have wreaked havoc in the polls and no conference is feeling it more than the ACC. It goes both ways for the conference as Wake Forest, Louisville and Virginia all have won their opening series going into their third week of conference play.
However, Virginia Tech, Florida State, and NC State were not so fortunate as they struggled in their opening series, including Florida State’s stretch of losing six out of their last seven. The Seminoles have a chance to get back into the polls but it is a daunting task as they head to Charlottesville to take on Virginia.
NC State will get their chance as well with a road trip to Chestnut Hill to take on Boston College. The Eagles took their first two conference series against Virginia Tech and Florida State and are currently 16th in the polls.
Meanwhile, the SEC has seen plenty of movement as well after a stunning series where Missouri swept Tennessee. The previously second ranked Volunteers dropped to 12 in the polls ahead of two big series with Texas A&M and LSU. Ole Miss also plummeted in the polls after being swept by Vanderbilt on the road.
The Rebels now have another tough test ahead as the third ranked Florida comes to Oxford for a three game set. The series is arguably the biggest and most important of the weekend. The series will open at 2:30 eastern time with game one of a double header on Saturday, with the third game taking place on Sunday afternoon. Ole Miss has struggled with their pitching lately as Vanderbilt scored 27 total runs in their series a week ago. Expect a high scoring series and plenty of bullpen pitching.
Out on the west coast, UCLA cracked the top 10 and leapfrogged Stanford. The Cardinal had a rough series against USC two weeks ago as they dropped two of three. They then proceeded to sweep Oregon State but did not move in the poll, remaining at ninth. Meanwhile UCLA took two of three against Oregon and swept Arizona to jump from 13th to seventh.
The Bruins host Washington this weekend who is coming off of a home loss to Tulane on Wednesday night 14-9. The Huskies have had a good start to the year, including taking two of three against Utah, but this is their first true test.
