How To Watch: No. 17 South Carolina At Mississippi State
After losing a hard-fought game to remain in the SEC regular season title race on Wednesday night, Lamont Paris and the South Carolina Gamecocks will have to bounceback quickly from an emotional standpoint as they go on the road to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs. It's not just that the Bulldogs will be willing to play a half-court game much the Gamecocks, but that their home venue, known as 'The Hump' is one of the most notorious road environments in the SEC.
Since Mississippi State's head Chris Jans took over two offseasons ago, the Bulldogs are 23-7 in The Humphrey Coliseum, with one of those wins coming last season against Carolina by a score of 74-68. In the first matchup between the cross-divisional foes this season, Meechie Johnson went off for 24 points on 50 percent shooting from the floor in a 68-62 victory for the Gamecocks. Another important component that went South Carolina's way in January was rebounds, as they secured nine more rebounds as a team compared to Mississippi State.
One thing that the Gamecocks will have to quickly adapt to this time around is the role that freshman Bulldog guard Josh Hubbard now possesses, as he's gone from the team's 6th man to their starting point guard who adds a different dimension to Mississippi State's offensive attack. It will be critical that Ta'Lon Cooper, Meechie Johnson, and Jacobi Wright don't let Hubbard run the floor in transition. Tolu Smith, due to his large frame at the center spot, will be the other player Carolina'll have to contain through a group effort of BJ Mack, Collin Murray-Boyles and Josh Gray.
