Mississippi State's Chris Jans Reveals the Team's 'Good Problem'
No. 25 Mississippi State defeated Nicholls 74-61 on Friday after an all-around effort on both ends of the floor.
The Bulldogs finished with 18 assists, which is a stellar amount, yet they've tallied a similar number in each of their six games. This undefeated group truly embodies the teamwork mindset, as the highest and lowest scorers, whether it be a starter or bench player, don't have much of a margin.
In other words, Mississippi State has a ton of depth and seem to have an advantage regardless of which five players are on the floor. Bulldogs head coach opened up about his team's depth and stated an upcoming obstacle that every team in sports wishes they had.
“We may end up having some minute issues,” Jans said during the postgame press conference. “It’s a good problem to have. We’ll deal with it. That’s the whole deal with having depth—you have to be ready to go every day. You have to be on it, you have to have your mind right, you have to practice well, you have to be productive and when you get your shots in the game, your motor has to be revved.”
Every Bulldog's motor was revved on Friday, as each of them scored/logged numbers in the stat sheet. Jans was very excited about this rare accomplishment.
"I enjoy having balanced scoring," Jans said. "Certainly, we're not trying to hold anyone down but at the same time, it just makes it so difficult to prepare against from a defensive scouting perspective. If there's multiple guys that can have big nights, you're not relying on one thing to carry you offensively."
Although it's only been a few games, Mississippi State has proven that a team doesn't need a landsliding scoring leader, as Josh Hubbard, the player that currently holds the top spot, comes off the bench.
Depth is a very powerful asset in any sport. If the Bulldogs can continue to spread the ball around to every player, their chemistry will only help them rise in the rankings.
