Freshman Spotlight: David Mershon Makes Strong Impact In His First Collegiate Game
The 2023 season is underway for Mississippi State baseball and despite some ups and downs and discombobulation at some times, there have been several bright moments.
And one of the positives to look at has been the optimism surrounding the freshmen. Among those is first-year infielder David Mershon.
Tuesday night marked a strong outing for him as his first at bat was a powerful shot that almost escaped outfield but was caught.
Mershon proceeded to build on that with a tremendous play his second time up to bat. He's shown the ability to read the field and noticed the third baseman from Valparaiso tended to play deep, so he made a bunt single that ended up loading all the bases.
Mershon went 2-for-3 at the plate and made a run in during the fourth inning and drew a walk in the sixth inning. While in the field, Mershon demonstrated strong defense from third base and shortstop.
Mershon made his name known in the scrimmages leading up to the start of the season but has recently been out due to injury. But he made his debut count, with that fourth-inning bunt setting a tone for the game that helped the Diamond Dawgs in their victory. Mershon has a skill the team has been missing and so far he has only made the offense stronger.
It will be interesting to see how things continue to develop for the immense talent State is developing like Mershon as the Bulldogs return to Dudy Noble form March 10th-12th in a three game series against Lipscomb.
