Ole Miss Hits Walk Off Home Run to Beat MSU
OXFORD, Miss. – The outcome of Mississippi State’s first two games of the weekend series against Ole miss was never in doubt. With a dominant win Friday and a no-hitter on Saturday, there wasn’t much drama late.
That changed in Sunday’s game.
Ole Miss catcher Lexie Brady hit a solo home run to centerfield to give her team the walk-off victory, 10-9 in the eighth inning. It’s the Lady Rebels’ first win against MSU since March 15, 2021.
The Bulldogs (19-4, 2-1 SEC) began Sunday’s game as it has done so in the first two games of the series, jumping out to a lead in the top of the first inning. Madisyn Kennedy hit a three-run home run to left field to give the Bulldogs the early lead.
However, unlike the previous two games, the Ole Miss bats responded back. The Lady Rebels scored a pair of runs in their first turn at the plate and tied the game at 6-6 with a four-run third inning. Ole Miss had its best offensive showing in the series with 12 hits, including four extra-base hits and nine RBIs.
The Bulldogs used three different pitchers to try and slow down the Lady Rebels. Matalasi Faapito got the start, but was relieved by Lexi Sosa after pitching 2.1 innings and allowing five runs on six hits and three walks and four strikeouts. Sosa would finish the third and fourth innings inside the circle before Josey Marron came in to pitch the remainder of the game.
The walk-off home run gave Marron her first loss of the season after starting off 7-0.
Ole Miss had a walk-off opportunity in the seventh inning with a runner at third and two outs. But freshman Kylee Edwards ended the threat with a clutch throw from deep in the infield and sent the game into extra innings.
The Bulldogs return to Starkville for a double-header against Memphis on Tuesday and then a single game against Louisiana-Monroe on Wednesday.
