No. 21 MSU Gives No. 13 Texas A&M First SEC Loss

Bulldogs’ pitcher strikes out nine batters to lead MSU in Sunday's game

STARKVILLE – No. 21 Mississippi State and No. 13 Texas A&M saved their most exciting game for the series finale Sunday.

The Bulldogs (21-6, 3-3 SEC) bounced back from their Saturday losses to defeat Texas A&M (25-3, 5-1 SEC), 6-5.

Aspen Wesley (7-2) got the win inside the circle for MSU after giving up seven runs in only 1.2 innings on Saturday. The fifth-year senior started slowly, giving up two home runs to the Aggies in the first two innings before shutting them down for the final five innings. Wesley allowed just one more run and finished the game with four walks and nine strikeouts, including four in a row in the third and fourth innings.

The Aggies opened Sunday’s game with a three-run home run in the first inning, but MSU’s Madisyn Kennedy’s hot bat answered back in the next half inning with a three-run homer of her own.

Trailing 4-3 in the fourth inning, Nadia Barbary tied the game with a double to left field that allowed Brylie St. Clair to score after reach base on a walk. St. Clair would give the Bulldogs their first lead of the weekend in the sixth inning when she scored on a passed ball and Ella Wesolowski extended the lead with a RBI single to right field.

Wesolowski’s RBI single proved to be the game-winning run. Texas A&M’s Wiggins hit a leadoff home run to bring the score to 6-5. But Wesley forced a pair of flyouts and a groundout to record the final three outs and secure the win for MSU.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a midweek doubleheader at Alabama State on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Bulldogs will then travel to Fayettville, Ark. For a three-game series against No. 20 Arkansas (22-6, 2-1 SEC).
