DECOMMIT: Michigan State football loses 2nd-highest ranked 2024 prospect
When Michigan State hires its next head football coach, one of the top priorities and first tasks for the next coaching staff will be salvaging what they can of the Spartans' 2024 recruiting class.
On Monday, Michigan State suffered another blow to next season's class when four-star Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day running back Anthony Carrie announced that he was decommitting from the Spartans and reopening his recruitment.
Ranked No. 287 overall, the No. 20 running back and No. 39 player from the state of Florida according to 247Sports composite rankings, Carrie had been the second-highest ranked prospect in Michigan State's class prior to his decommitment. MSU running backs coach Effrem Reed is the Spartans' primary recruiter for Carrie.
In the wake of former head coach Mel Tucker being fired, Michigan State has seen its 2024 recruiting class gutted, with six former verbal pledges re-opening their recruitments. In addition to Carrie, MSU has seen four-star safety Reggie Powers (No. 275), four-star offensive lineman Andrew Dennis (No. 387), three-star cornerbacks Camren Campbell (No. 882) and Syair Torrence (No. 979) and three-star offensive tackle Logan Bennett (No. 1378) all leave the class.
Prior to Tucker being fired, Michigan State also suffered a decommitment from four-star cornerback Jamari Howard (No. 123). As a result of all this attrition, the Spartans' 2024 class ranking has plummeted to No. 90 in the country and second-worst in the Big Ten. MSU has just eight players currently committed, with National Signing Day (Dec. 20) approaching quickly.
According to various reports, Michigan State hopes to name its next head football coach quickly after the Spartans conclude their 2023 season on Nov. 24 against Penn State in Detroit.
