Michigan State Super Star Youngster Gary Harris Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Freshman guard leads MSU in scoring through three games.

Michigan State freshman guard Gary Harris has been named the Big Ten men’s basketball Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday, Nov. 19. In two games last week, Harris averaged 18.5 points in a pair of Spartan victories. Through three games, Harris leads MSU in scoring at 16.0 ppg.

In wins over No. 7 Kansas and Texas Southern, Harris shot .636 from the field, .429 from 3-point range and .857 from the foul line. Against the Jayhawks, Harris scored 18 points, hitting 7-of-12 shots. He was even more efficient in a 19-point effort against Texas Southern, connecting on 7-of-10 shots, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range.

Harris joins Sam Vincent (1981-82) and Raymar Morgan (2006-07) as the only freshmen in MSU history to score in double figures in their first three games. Harris’ 16.0 ppg scoring average is the best three-game average for any Spartan in the Izzo era.

Harris becomes just the second Spartan to capture the honor in its three-year history, joining Branden Dawson who was honored on Jan. 30, 2012.
